The Experience Gap

I started Bright Growth to solve a marketing leadership gap. With more than 20 years as a B2B start-up operator and investor, I recognized a pattern for tech CEOs: Early-stage companies are often founded by people without marketing backgrounds. This is ”the experience gap.”  

The Transition Gap

There is a second pattern specific to marketing: The tenure of marketing heads is often only 18–24 months. The duration of no VPM or CMO is “the transition gap.” The risk of a marketing leadership gap is slow or stalled growth that can completely derail any dream of building a successful company.

The Foundation

In the seed stage, founders make many big marketing decisions about things like the company name, pricing, brand, website, go-to-market strategy, and channels. Sometimes those decisions are great, and sometimes they’re costly. Newer companies often can’t afford an experienced marketing executive or can’t attract one. I advise CEOs on how to best set up marketing from day one so they see fast traction without pricey mistakes.

The Upgrade

After a series A, a CEO has enough dollars and sense to hire an enthusiastic marketing director. But is that person focused on the right strategy and hiring the right people to deliver 3x ARR growth? If not, the CEO faces slower growth and needs to augment their initial marketer. As a part-time head of marketing, I’m here to help marketers succeed through mentorship and guidance. I can build the marketing organization until a CEO is ready and able to hire a full-time VP of Marketing.

The Bridge

CEOs of scale-stage companies—series B, C, and D+—sometimes lose their marketing leaders. Then what? They’re faced with having to backfill the role while fulfilling their own obligations. That executive search may take two to six quarters. In the interim, a fractional CMO bridges the leadership gap. That person motivates the marketing team to deliver results, leaving a CEO to focus on hiring an excellent full-time CMO.
